Interview Questions:
1) How old were you when you first decided you wanted to do music?
5IVE STAR: Well, music has always been a huge part of my life and I guess I always knew music is something that I would always pursue in some form or fashion. As an artist, I'm giving music a message and a story so I am definitely doing what I am destined to due.
2) Who would you say inspires you the most as an artist?
5IVE STAR: There are artist who change music history forever. I think of these artists often in my journey. I would say the artists that have influenced me the most have to be; Lauryn Hill, Outkast, Prince and Bob Marley. Their ability to make music that is still relevant in any year atany time is truly what art is about. They had/have the ability to transcend fads, times and cultures. As an artist with a message, I have to imagine this is the pinnacle.
3) Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
5IVE STAR: There are things that I definitely visualize every day. One of those things is being a Grammy winning artist. The goal ultimately is to bring a brand of music to the world, and change music forever. I seek to be very influential in the direction of the industry in the next 5 years.
4) What artist would you like to collaborate with?
5IVE STAR: If I had to pick one artist to collaborate with, it would have to be Prince. I mean with his style and me bringing a Hip-Hop flavor to what he does would be insane.
5) What would you say is your biggest accomplishments?
5IVE STAR: Feeling like I haven't accomplished anything.
6) What is the biggest thing in your life that you regret and wish you
could change?
5IVE STAR: I would have to say listening to people who tried to tell me who do be as an artist. In my early career, people always wanted me to have a particular style in the box they saw me. I never saw that box and continue to allow the music to shape the artist that I am. I regret that I let people try to determine what kind of artist I should be. It became a big waste of time until I became my true identity regardless of what people ultimately thought.
7) What is 1 thing that you want fans to always remember you by?
5IVE STAR: That I always made music for the art of music. We often forget as artists that without the fans there is no art. I make art for the fans. It is a form of expression to connect with people who identify with a song, a lyric, or a melody. Without them I don't exist.
8) What is the hardest thing about being in the music industry?
5IVE STAR: Everything. (Laughs) The easiest part is making the music since that is what comes natural. The hardest thing is gaining that exposure. The music industry is very much a business and if you don't have anything to offer which will be a financial success, your career won't last long. There are millions of people who want to do exactly what you want to do so you better be better than all of 'em.
9) What separates you from other artist out right now?
5IVE STAR: Well, I have set the bar so high. With a name like 5ive Star you better. (Laughs) My objective is to make better music, better visuals, be more creative than anyone who is also making music signed or unsigned. Fortunately, I have found my own lane. It's something that so many people talk about. I am glad that being myself has become my own lane. It's unique without having to be forced. There are so many copycats these days, and it's unfortunate but the reality is that success breeds artists that mimic what they see not what they don't see.
10) If you weren’t doing music what would you be doing?
5IVE STAR: If I wasn't an artist then I would be producing or managing other artists. I would have to be in the industry. That's a must.
11) When it comes to music what is one thing you wish you knew five years ago?
5IVE STAR: Wow, I'm giving away all my secrets. (Laughs) Ok, so pay attention. As an artist that is coming up you have to sound better or at least as good as the industry. You have to compete on a level that sounds successful. Potential to be a great artist is dead. In this day and age you have to prove it with your demo. You have to show greatness. The second thing I would say is that your team is everything. You can't do this alone, so have people in place who know their role and believe in what you do.
12) Where is the strangest place a fan has every approached you?
5IVE STAR: In the bathroom...yes a female....go figure. I washed my hands. (Laughs)
13) Have you been given any advice that’s stuck?
5IVE STAR: Great question. The answer is to never stop creating. There are people who say ok great so you made a mixtape and let's shop it and focus on performances. That is cool, but always make new music. As an artist that is what inspires you. The creativity is always what keeps you going so never stop finding that new production and making that new song.
14) How do you plan on changing the game?
5IVE STAR: I plan to bring a whole new sound to music. It's the only way to change the game and to influence a new era of Hip-hop. I plan on being a game changer from the jump; it's just what I'm here to do.
15) Musically who are you mostly compared to?
5IVE STAR: It's only natural that people look at me and say Eminem. I mean you can't escape that shadow and it's only second nature. But, when the music is heard most people don't have an answer to that. I'm ok with that.
